The brief: A bespoke illustration for the website of ‘Cultures of Knowledge‘; a large externally funded research project, based in the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford.

‘Cultures of Knowledge: Networking the Republic of Letters’ focuses on early modern (broadly 1500-1800) correspondence. The core brief, working with scholars, libraries, archives and publishers around the world, is to develop a freely accessible online database containing metadata on large numbers of manuscript letters from this period. A prestigious yet friendly project, with a growing number of international partners, and the website is now established as a major resource in the field.

The brief called for a stylized, whimsical, and playful design to sum up the work of the project, without being childish.

This is absolutely GORGEOUS; thank you so much….this colourful cast look brilliant; so much better than I imagined when I was first struck by the notion of getting an illustration. We’re really, really delighted with it…very many thanks again for this first-class work.
